The Assamese chador mekhela, also known simply as mekhela chador, is a traditional attire from Assam, India. It consists of two main parts:
1. Mekhela: This is a long skirt that is wrapped around the waist and tucked in to form a cylindrical shape.
2. Chador: This is a piece of cloth draped over the shoulders and pinned in place.
The fabric used is often silk or cotton, and the attire is known for its intricate weaving patterns and traditional Assamese designs, such as the gold or silver motifs called “assam silk” or “muga silk.”
The mekhela chador is typically worn during festivals, cultural events, and formal occasions, and it reflects the rich cultural heritage of Assam.
